1913 Boxing. The sport of boxing was effectively outlawed in Belgium.

1936 Olympics. In Berlin, Adolf Hitler officially opened the 11th Olympic Games. It was to prove the last Games for 12 years.

1970 Football. Goalkeeper David James is born. The former England number one's career  included spells at Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City, Portsmouth and Bristol City.

1976 Motor racing. Niki Lauda was badly burned in an accident during the German Grand Prix.

1980 Athletics. At the Moscow Olympics, Britain's Seb Coe won gold in the 1,500m.

1987 Boxing. Mike Tyson became the undisputed world heavyweight champion.

1989 Cricket. Australia win the fourth Test at Old Trafford to become the first side to regain the Ashes in England since 1934. It was also Australia's 100 th win against England.

1993 Football. Former soldier Guy Whittingham was transferred from Portsmouth to Aston Villa for £1.2million. He later played for Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday.

1996 Athletics. Michael Johnson set a new 200m world record of 19.32 seconds. He also became the first man to win an Olympic gold for the 200m and 400m.

2001 Football. Celtic beat Manchester United in Ryan Giggs' testimonial game - Eric Cantona made a brief appearance in the match.
