SARUM Orienteering Club’s Lucy Butt was celebrating a double gold medal haul at the weekend after a stunning performance at the British Middle Distance Orienteering Championships.

Competing at Strensall Common near York on Sunday, the South Wilts Grammar School student ran the 5.5km, visiting the 22 mandatory control points in 33.44 minutes - beating her nearest rival by a massive 77 seconds to take the Women’s 18 Elite gold.

Her nifty 6.1m/km average speed across the difficult tussock grass of the common was also good enough to beat competitors in the Women’s 20 Elite event, who were running the same course. The narrow margin of just two seconds secured the gold medal and competition trophy in this class also.

Just 24 hours earlier, Lucy had finished eighth out of 18 runners in the A-final in the Women’s Open category at the British Sprint Orienteering Championships at York University.

The campus made for some highly challenging orienteering as competitors tried to navigate their way at high speed along courses of 2.3km.

Both days’ events were international selection contests and as well as being very pleased with her overall results from the weekend, Lucy hopes selectors were sufficiently impressed to name her in the team to represent Great Britain at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Slovakia later this summer.

Orienteers from SARUM and South Wiltshire were well represented at the competition which continues in the Lake District in May with the British Long Distance and Relay Championships.

Before then, there is plenty of orienteering action to be found closer to home.

Salisbury now has its own permanent orienteering course located in the Avon Valley Nature Reserve next to the Five Rivers Leisure Centre.

The course has been developed in partnership between SARUM and Wiltshire Council and will be officially opened on April 28.
