SALISBURY powerlifter Paul Newell returns to action tomorrow (Sunday) when he heads to Kent to compete at the South of Britain Championships.

The traditional curtain raiser for the new powerlifting season is being held in Folkestone.

Newell finished fourth at last year's World Championships and is hoping to put an injury-plagued build-up behind him and qualify for this summer's National Championships.

The 32-year-old said: "My training has been hampered so far this year by shoulder and lower back injuries.

"This competition will be all about putting in a solid performance - doing enough to ensure qualification for the British and then building on that for the rest of the season."
