SALISBURY powerlifter Paul Newell returns to action this weekend when he heads to Kent to compete at the South of Britain Championships.

The traditional curtain raiser for the new powerlifting season is being held in Folkestone on Sunday (April 18).

Newell (pictured) finished fourth at last year's World Championships and is hoping to put an injury-plagued build-up behind him and qualify for this summer's National Championships.

The 32-year-old said: "My training has been hampered so far this year by shoulder and lower back injuries.

"This competition will be all about putting in a solid performance - doing enough to ensure qualification for the British and then building on that for the rest of the season."

Fellow Salisbury lifter Neil Arnold, who closed 2010 with his first ever world title, is sitting out the season opener, but both he and Newell plan to lift at the British Championships, to be held in Christchurch in July, and November's World Championships in Finland.
