SALISBURY-based Paula Walker and her GB2 brakewoman Kelly Thomas had to settle for 11th place in the women’s two-man bobsleigh event at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The Blackburn-born 23-year-old, now based at Bulford, pilots the sled.

The pair were placed 14th after two heats and had set their sights on a top ten finish.

Although they improved three places, the bobsledders closed 3.90 seconds behind Canada 1, who led from start to finish to claim the gold. Canada 2 took second place ahead of USA 2.

The British duo survived a bobsleigh crash during a training run down the infamous Whistler Sliding Centre track – the sled overturning midway down the course, meaning they slid all the way to the finishing line.

Both walked away unharmed.

The GB1 team suffered a similar fate in the actual competition, forcing their withdrawal.
