1895 Football. The original FA Cup was stolen from a shop in Birmingham. Despite a reward of £10 being offered, it was never recovered. It was on display in the window of William Shillcock's boot and shoe manufacturers shop in Newton Row. It was later claimed that it had been melted down to make counterfeit florins. Holders Aston Villa were fined £25 - the cost of a new trophy.

1927 Baseball. Babe Ruth hits his 50th home run of his career.

1935 Tennis. The USA win the Davis Cup for the seventh year running.

1945 Football. German football legend Franz Beckenbauer is born.

1949 Rugby union. England and British Lions player Roger Uttley is born.

1950 Motorcycle racing. Barry Sheene is born.
