1942 Football. Former Manchester City player Alan Oakes is born in Winsford. Holds the most appearance record for City (676 plus four as sub). Played for the club from 1958 to 1976.

1952 Tennis. Maureen Connolly beats Doris Hart to win the 66th US Open title.

1953 Tennis. Maureen Connolly wins the 67th US Open title, defeating Doris Hart for the second year running.

1959 Football. Des Bremner is born in Aberchider. He played for Hibernian before joining Aston Villa, helping them win the league title and then the European Cup. Later played for Birmingham City, Fulham and Walsall.

1963 Cricket. Sussex won the first domestic one-day competition.

1965 Football. Former Luton Town, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City player Garry Parker is born in Oxford. Helped Leicester win the League Cup in 1997 - the club's first major honour in the game.

2013 Football. Laverstock & Ford return to the FA Vase with a 5-2 success against Cheddar.

2013 Olympics. Tokyo is awarded the 2020 Olympic Games.

2015 Football. Scotland lose 3-2 at home to Germany in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

2015 Tennis. Andy Murray fails to reach the last eight of the US Open, losing in four sets to South African Kevin Anderson. The defeat breaks a run of 18 successive Grand Slam quarter-final appearances for the Scot.
