1939 Athletics. Romanian long jumper Viorica Viscopoleanu is born. Wins gold at 1968 Olympics.

1953 Motor sport. Nigel Mansell is born. Wins Formula 1 Championship in 1992.

1958 Football. Goalkeeper Nigel Spink was born in Chelmsford. After playing for Chelmsford he joined Aston Villa and helped them win the European Cup -  Spink had been named on the bench for the final against Bayern Munich. But number one 'keeper Jimmy Rimmer was injured eight minutes into the game.

2009 Football. After a summer of turmoil, Salisbury City kick off their Blue Square Premier season with a 2-0 win away at Rushden & Diamonds. An own goal and a Chris Flood effort secure the points for the Whites. Rushden missed a penalty in the opening minutes of the game.
