1935 Cycling. Belgian cyclist Romain Maes wins the Tour de France.

1936 Cricket. West Indian cricketing legend Garfield Sobers was born.

1937 Cricket. Lancashire's Eddie Paynter scored 322 against Sussex on the same day that Richard Moore hit 316 for Hampshire against Warwickshire.

1938 Cricket. Don Bradman scores 202 for Australia against Somerset. He hit 32 fours in the innings which lasted 225 minutes.

1958 Athletics. Inspirational Canadian athlete and activist Terry Fox is born.

1964 Cricket. England register a draw after scoring 611 in reply to Australia's 656-8.

1966 Horse racing. Florence Nangle was granted a licence to train racehorses - the first woman to be allowed to do so. But the fight had taken her 20 years, so she was 70 when the ruling was made.

1977 Cricket. Ian Botham makes his Test debut for England against Australia at Trent Bridge, taking 5-74.

1981 Football. Manchester United and England player Michael Carrick is born.

1984 Olympics. The Los Angeles Games opened, but were boycotted by the USSR and many eastern European countries.

1985 Football. Almost 20 years after scoring a hat-trick in the World Cup final, Geoff Hurst repeated his performance in a charity match between the two 1966 finalists.

1987 Horse racing.  Angel Cordero Jr becomes only the fourth jockey to register 6,000 wins.

2003 Cricket. Nasser Hussain announced he was to quit as captain of England's Test team. He had already stepped down as one-day team captain.

2013 Motor racing. Lewis Hamilton wins the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
