1887 Baseball. 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson is born in Pickens County, South Carolina. As a member of the 1919 Chicago White Sox team he was associated with the infamous Black Sox Scandal - the attempt to fix the World Series. Although he was banned from playing after the 1920 season, he still holds many Major League records and has the third highest career batting average in history.

1920 Tennis. USA win the 15th Davis Cup, beating Australasia 5-0 in Auckland.

1945 Cricket. Umpire Barry Dudleston is born.

1950 Darts. Dennis Priestley is born.

1951 Cycling. Wim Van Est becomes the first Dutchman to win the Tour de France.

1951 Cricket. Len Hutton scores his 100th 100 in the game between Yorkshire and Surrey at The Oval.

1960 Football. A crowd of 205,000 people watch the game between Brazil and Uruguay setting the record attendance for a sporting event.

1989 Football. Real Madrid and Wales star Gareth Bale is born in Cardiff.

1994 Football. At the end of the World Cup Final, The Three Tenors - Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras - perform in Los Angeles.

1995 Motor racing. Juan Manuel Fangio dies aged 84.
