1884 Horse racing. Buchanan and Isaac Murphy win the tenth Kentucky Derby in a time of 2:40.25.

1907 Athletics. Irish 400m hurdler Robert Tisdall is born. Wins gold at 1932 Olympics.

1918 Football. England international Wilf Mannion is born in Middlesbrough. He made more than 340 appearances for his home town club, scoring 99 goals. He played 26 times for England between 1946 and 1951. Mannion had fought in France and Italy during the second World War and after returning to Middlesbrough requested a move. The club refused to sell him and he went on strike, which made him ineligible for England duty. He eventually backed down and resumed his career with 'Boro.
