1904 Olympics. The third Olympic Games and the first to be held in the USA begin in St Louis. Boxing was introduced as an Olympic sport for the first time.

1918 Baseball. Sunday baseball is made legal in Washington DC.

1927 Horse racing. Linus McAtee wins the 53rd Kentucky Derby aboard Whiskery.

1938 Football. England beat Germany 6-3 in Berlin. Germany had been unbeaten in 16 games prior to this meeting at the Olympic Stadium. Despite the result, the match is often remembered more for the England players' rending of the Nazi salute prior to kick off.

1948 Cricket. Kent and England batsman Bob Woolmer is born in Kanpur. He later coached South Africa, Warwickshire and Pakistan. He died suddenly of natural causes in Jamaica in 2007, just hours after Pakistan had been knocked out of the World Cup by Ireland.

1961 Motor racing. Stirling Moss wins the Monaco Grand Prix.

1966 Football. In the FA Cup final, Everton beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2.

1973 Rugby union. Leicester and England international Julian White is born.

1975 Football. Dynamor Kiev win the European Cup Winners Cup.

1977 Football. England's World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore retires from football.

1981 Football. Spurs win the FA Cup by beating Manchester City 3-2 in a replay.

1988 Football. Wimbledon cause a shock by beating Liverpool 1-0 at Wembley in the final of the FA Cup.

1994 Football. Manchester United beat Chelsea 4-0 in the FA Cup final.

1995 Football. Blackburn Rovers won the Football League Championship for the first time since 1914.

2000 Football. Wimbledon were relegated from the Premiership after losing 2-0 to Southampton.

2003 Football. Graham Taylor quit as manager of Aston Villa.

2011 Football. Manchester City lift the FA Cup after beating Stoke City 1-0 at Wembley Stadium. It is Man City's first major trophy for 35 years. Earlier in the day, Manchester United secured the Premiership title courtesy of a 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers.
