1945 Football. One of England's all-time greats, Alan Ball is born. The World Cup winner's career included spells with Blackpool, Everton, Arsenal and Southampton. He later managed Saints, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

1946 Cricket. West Indies batsman Leonard Baichan, who scored a century on his international debut, is born in Rose Hall, British Guiana.

1951 Swimming. Sweden's Olympic gold medallist swimmer Gunnar Larrson is born.

1970 Baseball. Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks hits his 500th home run. Born in Dallas, he played for the Cubs from 1953 to 1971 and finished his career with 512 home runs. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 1977.

1975 Rugby union. New Zealand superstar Jonah Lomu is born in Auckland. He won 63 caps for the All Blacks between 1994 and 2002.

1976 Football. Bayern Munich win the 21st European Cup beating St Etienne 1-0 at Hampdon Park, Glasgow.

1977 Snooker. British snooker player Graham Dott is born in Larkhall, Scotland. He won the 2006 World Championship.

1979 Tennis. Chris Evert's 125-match winning streak on clay comes to an end.

1982 Football. The US Football League is formed.

1986 Cycling. Fred Markham becomes the first cyclist to reach 65mph on a level course, unaided by wind.

2005 Football. US sports tycoon Malcolm Glazer won control of Manchester United in a £790-million takeover bid giving him a 70-per-cent stake in the club.

2013 Football. Salisbury City secure promotion back to the Conference Premier with a 3-2 extra time win against Dover Athletic in the play-off final.
