1780 Horse racing. The first Derby was run at Epsom - 6/4 favourite Diomed, with Charles Bunbury in the saddle, won the race.

1899 Horse racing. Fred Taral aboard Manuel wins the 25th Kentucky Derby.

1924 Olympics. The eighth Olympic Games open in Paris.

1944 Footballer and cricketer Jim Cumbes was born in East Didsbury, Manchester. He played for Tranmere Rovers, WBA, Aston Villa and Portland Timbers before finishing his footballing career with non-league Runcorn, Southport and Worcester City. He was also a noted fast bowler and competent fielder with Lancashire, Warwickshire, Surrey and Worcestershire. In 1976 he was appointed manager of Warwickshire.

1957 Football. Aston Villa beat Manchester United to win the FA Cup for a then record seventh time.

1974 Horse racing. The 100th Kentucky Derby is won by Cannonade and Angel Cordero Jr.

1987 Football. Spanish footballer Cesc Fabregas is born in Catalonia.

1994 Football. Arsenal win the European Cup Winners Cup, beating Parma 1-0 in Copenhagen.

1997 Golf. Phil Blackmar wins the 50th Houston Open.

1998 Snooker. In Sheffield, John Higgins wins the Snooker World Championship.

2002 Football. Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-0 to win the FA Cup. Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljungberg score their goals.

2003 Yachting. Britain's Emma Richards became the youngest person and the first woman to complete the 29,000 Around Alone solo round the world race.

2003 Football. Manchester United won the Premiership title for the eighth time in 11 years.

2012 Football. Blackpool beat Birmingham City 1-0 in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.

2016 Football. Manchester City lose their Champions League semi-final second leg away at Real Madrid 0-1 to exit by the same score on aggregate.
