THE Tartan Spartan took the honours in the feature race at Salisbury's opening meeting of 2017.

Tadhg O'Shea was aboard the John Patrick Shanahan-trained four-year-old, sent off in the Betfred City Bowl Handicap at a backable 3/1.

Sunblazer (20/1) was one-and-half lengths behind in second with former Salisbury winner Paris Protocol (5/4 fav) third.

Five favourites delivered in the day's eight races.

O'Shea and Shanahan had already opened their account by taking the opening race of the day, the first division of the Betfred Racing Like Us On Facebook Maiden Stakes, with 4/5 favourite Sharp Defence.

Salisbury favourite David Elsworth claimed the second when David Egan and Snow Squaw (7/1) got the better of 10/11 favourite Del Parco by a head.

Favourites also provided wins for Sir Michael Stoute (Adamant) and Roger Charlton (Stone The Crows) and Michael Bell (Cheval Blanche) and Mark Pattinson (Almanack).

The Going was Firm (good to Firm in places).
