1915 Football. Aston Villa beat Manchester City 4-1 in the final game of the 1914/15 season. It was the last match at Villa Park for four years because of the first World War.
1924 Football. Newcastle United were fined £750 for fielding a weakened team in a league match with Aston Villa played just five days before the sides clashed in the FA Cup final. Only one United player who played in the league game was in the final side.
1959 Angling. A 1,211kg great white shark becomes the largest fish ever caught on a rod. Alf Dean landed the 16' 10" shark.
1964 Football. Kevin Gage is born in London. He was Wimbledon's youngest ever player.
1970 Football. Manchester United's Bobby Charlton makes his 100th appearance for England.
1975 Athletics. Bill Rodgers wins the 79th Boston Marathon in 2:09.55.
1982 Football. Aston Villa reached the European Cup final after a goalless draw with Anderlecht in the second leg of their semi-final.
1987 Cricket. Richard Hadlee scores 151 not out against Sri Lanka in a Test match.
1997 Snooker. Ronnie O'Sullivan scored the fastest-ever maximum 147 break when he cleared the table at the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield in five minutes and 20 seconds.
2001 Boxing. Lennox Lewis lost his title to newcomer Hasim Rahman, who had started the contest at odds of 42/1.
2003 Football. West Ham United manager Glenn Roeder collapsed after a match in which his side beat Middlesbrough 1-0. He was rushed to hospital where it was confirmed he had suffered a stroke.
2007 Football. Salisbury City drew 0-0 away at Nationwide Conference South play-off rivals Braintree Town.
2014 Football. Salisbury City win 3-0 at home to Welling United - all three goals were scored in the opening 20 minutes of the first half.
2014 Horse racing. Former BBC broadcaster Julian Wilson died, aged 73.
2015 Cricket. West Indies close the opening day of the Grenada Test on 188-5. Marlon Samuels scores 94 not out.
2015 Football. Bayern Munich overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit to beat FC Porto 7-4 on aggregate to reach the semi-final of the Champions League.
