1887 Motor sport. The first ever motor race was held in Paris. It was won by the only entrant.
1895 Football. Aston Villa beat WBA 1-0 in the FA Cup Final thanks to a goal after just 30 seconds. Crystal Palace was the setting for the final. John Devey collected the trophy from Lord Kinnaird and became the last player to do so as it was stolen and never recovered.
1912 Baseball. Detroit's Tiger Stadium opens - Tigers beat Cleveland Indians 6-5.
1916 Baseball. Weeghman Park (later Wrigley Field) opens in Chicago. Cubs beat Cin Reds 7-6.
1946 Athletics. Greek runner Stylianos Kyriakides wins the 50th Boston Marathon in a time of 2:29.27.
1949 Equestrianism. The Badminton Horse Trials were held for the first time at Badminton, Gloucestershire.
1949 Horse racing. In Albany, California, jockey Bil Shoemaker wins his first race.
1957 Football. Juventus paid £65,000 for Leeds United's Welsh international John Charles.
1963 Motor racing. Brazilian racing driver Maurico Gugelmin is born.
1970 Athletics. British athlete Ron Hill wins the 74th Boston Marathon in a time of 2:10.30 to set a new US marathon record.
1976 Football. Former Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Manchester City and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given is born.
1981 Snooker. Steve Davis, aged 23, won the World Snooker Championships for the first time.
1995 Cricket. R.E.S. 'Bob' Wyatt, who captained England 16 times, dies.
1997 Golf. Hale Irwin wins the 58th PGA Seniors Golf Championship.
2002 Football. Salisbury City, already relegated, suffer a 5-1 reverse away at Tamworth in their penultimate Southern League Premier Division game. Wayne Turk scores their goal at The Lamb.
2010 Football. Salisbury City beat Altrincham 4-1 in their penultimate Blue Square Premier match of the season. Matt Tubbs scores two with Sean Clohessy and Jake Reid also on target in front of a crowd of 671 at the Ray Mac.

2014 Motor racing. Lewis Hamilton wins the Chinese Grand Prix.
