1897 Athletics. John J. McDermott of New York, wins the Boston Marathon, the first to be held in the USA, in a time of 2:55.10.

1897 Football. Aston Villa close their double-winning campaign with a 5-0 win at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers. A then record crowd of 35,000 were at Villa Park for the local derby.

1898 Athletics. The second Boston Marathon is won by Ron McDonald in 2:42.00.

1901 Athletics. Canadian Jim Caffrey wins the fifth Boston Marathon in a time of 2:29.23.6.

1915 Baseball. Baseball manager Harry Craft is born.

1933 Cricket. Celebrated cricket umpire Harold 'Dickie' Bird is born.

1953 Athletics. Italian high jumper Sara Simeoni, who won Olympic gold in 1980, is born.

1954 Football. Former Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest striker Trevor Francis is born. The European Cup winner later managed Birmingham City and Crystal Palace.

1956 Tennis. British tennis star turned TV presenter Sue Barker is born.

1960 Football. Former Nottingham Forest, Bolton, Barnsley, Aston Villa and Southampton player Stuart Gray is born in Withernsea. He later briefly managed Southampton.

1962 Athletics. Finnish runner Eino Oksanen wins the 66th Boston Marathon. His second successive victory came in a time of 2:23.48.

1970 Athletics. British athlete Kelly Holmes is born.

1978 Football. Argentinian player Gabriel Heinze is born.

1986 Boxing. Michael Spinks defeats Larry Holmes for the heavyweight boxing title.

1987 Cricket. Brendon Kuruppu scores 201 not out on his Test debut for Sir Lanka v New Zealand.

1987 Tennis. Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is born.

2008 Football. Salisbury City lose 2-0 at home to Cambridge United in a Blue Square Premier match. A crowd of just over 1,700 was at the Ray Mac.

2011 Football. Salisbury City beat Brackley Town 3-1 at the Ray Mac in a Zamaretto Southern League Premier Division match. Matt Wright puts them in front before two Kayne McLaggon goals wrap up the points.

2015 Football. Aston Villa beat Liverpool 2-1 to reach the FA Cup final.
