1896 Boxing. After Bob Fitzsimmons knocks out much larger opponent Jim Corbett to win the world heavyweight title, he famously quips: "The bigger they are, the harder they fall!"
1914 Golf. Chandler Harper, 1950 PGA champion, is born.
1957 Football. Thousands of football fans riot in Italy.
1964 Football. Former Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Tranmere Rovers player Shaun Teale is born in Southport. The defender started his career with non-league side Weymouth.
1970 Cricket. South Africa complete a 4-0 series win against Australia.
1973 Football. Ex-Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City player Chris Sutton is born.
1974 Cricket. Lawrence Rowe scores 302 against England in Bridgetown. He hits 36 fours and a six in the innings.
1984 Boxing. Tim Witherspoon knocks out Greg Page to land the heavyweight title.
1985 Cricket. India beat Pakistan to win the World Championship of Cricket.
2003 Motor sport. British motorcycle racing legend Barry Sheene dies.
2007 Football. Salisbury City lost 2-1 at home to Eastbourne Borough in a Nationwide Conference South match. Marvin Brown scored City's goal.
2009 Football. Matt Tubbs, Charlie Griffin, Darrell Clarke (pictured, below) and Chris Todd were all on target in Salisbury City's 4-0 win away at Weymouth in a Blue Square Premier match.
2012 Football. Downton go sixth in the Sydenhams League (Wessex) Premier Division after a 2-1 win at home to Blackfield & Langley. After trailing 1-0 at the break, the Robins score twice in five minutes early in the second half - Nic Turpin and Danny Urry goals securing the points.
