1931 Cricket. Don Bradman is bowled by Herman Griffith for a duck as West Indies beat Australia for the first time.

1936 Motor racing. British racing driver Jim Clark is born. He was world champion in 1963 and 1965.

1951 Football. Celtic, Liverpool and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish is born.

1954 Snooker. Willie Thorne is born.

1968 Boxing. Joe Frazier defeats Buster Mathis in 11 rounds for the heavyweight title.

1968 Tennis. Tennis authorities voted in favour of admitting professional players to Wimbledon. It was previously only open to amateur players.

1976 Ice skating. John Curry wins the men's figure skating World Championships.

2009 Football. Former Aston Villa player and former director Harry Parkes dies. He made 345 appearances for the Villa, his only club.

2013 Football. Manchester City beat Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park, reducing Manchester United's lead at the top of the Premiership to 12 points.
