SALISBURY swimmer Phil Muspratt was in elite level competition action at the weekend when he took part in the 50m and 100m freestyle events at the Derventio Excel February Festival Level 1 Meet.

The two-day event at Ponds Forge International Pool attracted a host of top level competitors including British Championships medalist Levi Lucas and 2014 Scottish Commonwealth Games swimmers; Richard Schafers, Jack Thorpe & Kieran McGuckin.

Muspratt's best performance came in the slash and dash 50m freestyle where he posted a top ten time in the preliminaries to finish just shy of the top eight who swam in the final on Sunday evening.

Lucas took gold in the final followed by Schafers of Scotland. Muspratt's preliminary time would have earned him sixth place and his personal best would have seen him beat McGuckin into third place.

"My time was an improvement on last week," he said. "And considering that I've put myself through hell in the gym this week, I am happy with my time and more importantly my swim, it was executed a lot better than it was last week at the Burns Open Meet. I'm feeling a lot of pain now so that I can hopefully reap the benefits in May at the European Masters Championships."
