GODOLPHIN School student Sophie Merritt was in fine form at Sheffield at the National Indoor Athletics Championships.

The fifth year youngster won a silver medal in the under 17s shot put final, missing out on gold by a mere five centimetres.

Sophie (pictured) declared herself happy with her personal best throw of 12.59m, but 'annoyed' that she had missed out on the top prize by such a small margin.

The athlete currently trains six times a week in Southampton in between studying for her GCSEs.

After her A-levels, Sophie says she would like to study sports psychology in the USA and has already received offers from two US universities. Both boast excellent training facilities which would enable her to continue her athletics career as well as her education.

Sophie says her dream is to represent Great Britain at he 2020 Olympic Games being held in Tokyo.
