SALISBURY Tri Club's 2013 season is certainly warming up nicely.

Six members of the club were in fine form at the recent Osprey sprint triathlon in Portland, which featured a 300m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run.

Despite the cold and windy conditions in Dorset, 2012 STC League winner Craig Gardiner was first Salisbury athlete home in a time of 1:04.44, earning him sixth place overall. Gardiner, who looks to be the one to beat in the new league, was closely followed in by Jon Hazel, eighth with 1:06.32, Adam Herridge, 12th in 1:07.25, Marcus Deyes, 25th in 1:10.53, and Keith Champion, 26th in 1:11.41.

Susan Stroud's strong training has clearly paid off, helping her cross the line in a time of 1:16.17, which earned her second place in her age group.

Meanwhile, closer to home at an event in Ringwood, which featured a 600m/28-mile/10km swim, bike and run, Salisbury's most improved athlete on 2012, Mark Jacobs wore the flash green for club and powered through the bike section in the New Forest to finish in a time of 2:20.06 for third place in his age category.

Emma Ekins completed her first triathlon at the Mad March Tri - the super sprint distance was covered in 01:12.52.10 for eighth place among the women - an outstanding achievement on a very cold morning.

At the Db Max Hullavington Duathlon in April, Tim Robertson was awarded a prize as the top SuperVet60.

Anyone interested in joining the club or taking up the sport might be interested in an introduction programme being launched this month.

The club is working in partnership with Wiltshire Council's sports development team and the Lewis Andrews Foundation (LAF) on the ten-week introduction to triathlon programme.

Included are a series of talks that will cover a range of topics including swimming technique, nutrition and race planning. The training programme can be adapted to suit the needs of anyone who signs up. Each week there will be a range of training sessions featuring swimming, cycling, transition training and running. All sessions will be run by qualified and experienced British Triathlon coaches.
